Alyssa

Alyssa grips Dean’s hand tightly; she can feel his heartbeat racing through the pulse point on his wrist. Her parents had powers. Her parents are dead. Her soul is bound to Dean’s. There is another world. She exists in that world. This world is spinning.

When Dean had said their parents were dead, the world fell out from under her, the slate floor crumbling away to an empty nothingness that she is now trying to fly herself out of. Her mind is spinning, she has a headache that makes her vision dance with dots, and she’s battling a losing fight with her lungs to keep her breathing even. There’s still so much more she wants to know, so much about who she is and what she can do, so much that she still doesn’t know, but the alarmed look on Dean’s face and the roiling nausea in her gut stops her short from asking John more questions.

There is something missing, something about John’s story that doesn’t add up completely. Something that leaves it feeling unfinished. John lifts his head from where he had tucked it against himself again to look at Dean as well. Dean is looking at Alyssa with an almost pained expression. “If we’re kindred.” He turns back to John, and Alyssa continues to watch Dean’s sharp profile, trying to understand the fear in it. “What do we do now? How do we merge?”

John clears his throat, emotion stripped raw evident in every movement he makes and every line etched into his face. “It’s probably safest you don’t merge yet.” Alyssa can see him pulling himself together at the seams, his pained expression twisting as he pulls it into something neutral. “It’s a long ritual that takes a lot of energy and is very strenuous on the mind. With everything going on, we want you to be as prepared as possible once your consciousnesses combine.” John stands up on shaky legs, leaning heavily on the wall to support him. John inhales deeply, and Alyssa can hear it rattle in his chest.

“I want to teach you more about how to control your powers before you merge.” Dean scrambles to his
